The science of archaeology was faced with serious problems and limitations for the most of the 20th century.
This material addresses the question of the development of archaeology in the United Kingdom. The reading passage suggests that there were significant limitations for its development in the twentieth century. The lecturer, on the other hand, stresses out that the situation in this sphere changed seriously after new rules and guidelines were adopted in 1990s.
To begin with, the reading passage highlights that increasing construction in Britain led to the destruction of many archaeologically valuable sites inasmuch construction was not being stopped even if artifacts were being found in the corresponding areas. Meanwhile, the professor argues that the new guidelines envisage a rule according to which the construction area must be examined from the archaeological point of view and the discovered values must be preserved before the construction is continued.
Additionally, the article posits that the lack of financial support or donorship from the government resulted in paying less attention to the examination of important sites. However, the professor states that the new rules oblige the construction companies to finance the archaeological related works and, therefore, the overall situation is improving.
Finally, the author invites attention to the fact that only limited amount of workplaces were available for people who wanted to become archaeologists. This in turn affected the state of affairs in field of archaeology. At the same time, according to the listening passage on of the effects of the mentioned regulations was the fact that the demand for professional archaeologists increased so that the number of relevant professionals in Britain increased, too.
