Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth than the Moon is. Thus the project of sending humans to Mars would require solving an array of problems the Moon missions did not have to face.
As it was mentioned in the passage considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars creates an array of problems that have to be solved for a mission like this to occur. Nevertheless, the professor disagrees. She implies that there are several solutions to these problems.
First, the writer mentions that a round-trip to Mars and back takes at least two years. In addition, a long-lasting trip requires an abundant amount of supply. The lecturer, on the other hand, points out that although supplying the travel can be challenging but it is not impossible. Because there have been some solutions like growing plants in water instead of soil. For more explanation, not only can growing plants in water recycle the water and later used as freshwater for occupants but also can produce fresh air for them.
Second, the passage explains that zero gravity can cause too much damage for participants that make the trip impossible. In contrast, the professor states that some astronauts have found some techniques for resisting the damage caused by a long amount of time in zero gravity. For example, taking vitamins and regular exercise. In this way, a long trip can be plausible.
Third, the author indicates that dangerous emissions of the sun can cause too much damage. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument and goes on to elaborate that space radiation only occurs occasionally. Moreover, some detectors can be used to alarm the occupants to stay in the spaceship that can be shield low weight protections. Therefore this issue can be solved.
