The reading and the lecture are both about the James McNeill Whistler’s, famous American painter, “symphony in the white” painting. The author of the reading feels that Symphony in white has been painted by the Whister. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that the painting was not the typical work of whistler style.
To begin with, the author argues that painting was hanged by the close friend in the museum after the Whistler’s death. The article mentions that he did that to attribute the whistlers work. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that whistler’s close friend museum showed painting of various artist, so painting might be the work of other painter. Additionally, he says that he might put the painting on display just because he owned it.
Secondly, the writer suggests that style of painting matches with the Whistler’s later life style. In the article, it is said that monochromatic plates were used. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that lots of other painters were drawing in the same style. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that monochromatic plates were popular during the phase.
Finally, the author posits that small butterfly on the right side of the painting shows that painting was Whistlers work. Moreover, in the article it is stated image of butterfly used as a symbol of whistlers work instead of his signature. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that butterfly location and size is not similar to the Whistlers butterfly. He notes that it was a case of forgery as it is drawn after the Whistler’s death.
