Sea okras
The writer and the lecturer discuss the possible factors that may have decreased sea otter population. While the writer of the article feels that pollution is the main reason that is causing sea otter population to plummet, the lecturer states that attacks by the predators is responsible for the decline in sea otter population.
Firstly, the writer claims that environmental pollution is responsible for the sea otter population to decline because water samples exhibited that there are more than usual chemicals in the seas owing to industrial wastes or oil rigs and these chemicals are life-threatening to the sea otters. The lecturer refutes this claim by stating that if sea otters were killed by the hazardous chemicals then they would wash up in the shores but no sea otters were found dead in the shores. Hence, the lecturer states that the sea otters were killed and eaten by their predators in the sea and their bodies were not found.
Secondly, according to the article not only sea otters but other mammals such as sea lions were decreasing in number, therefore, the writer argued that it had to be environmental pollution that was causing populations of many mammals of the same ecosystem to decline. Furthermore, the writer refuses to hold predation responsible for the populations of these mammals to decline because predators such ocras prefer whales over these smaller mammals. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges this argument by stating that since the population of the whales declined ocras have changed their diet and hunt smaller mammals such sea otters more than they usually did.
Lastly, the article mention that in some parts population of sea otters decreased more than other parts. Hence, the writer feels that due to uneven distribution of pollution this disparity occurred. The lecturer, however, asserts that some parts were more accessible to ocras hence sea otter population declined more in those specific regions.
