the sea otter population's decline
The reading and the lecture are both about the sea otter population's decline. The author of the article believes that the pollution hypothesis explains this phenomenon better than the predator hypothesis and then provides three reasons to support his claim. In contrast, the lecturer states that the results of the ongoing investigations have shown that attacks by predators are the most likely cause of the sea otter population's decline.
To begin with, according to the reading, the water samples have shown that there is an increase in levels of chemicals that can cause sea otter's death. However, the speaker mentions that the pollution theory does not seem right since no one can find dead sea otters washed up on Alaska beaches. But, the predator theory looks consistent with the mentioned point, as predators eat the sea otters, and because of that, there are no washed-up sea otters on beaches.
Secondly, the author suggests that environmental pollution decreases the population of seals and sea lions as well since environmental pollutants affect the entire ecosystem, not just one species. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She states that whales have disappeared as a result of human hunters. Hence, the orcas have been forced to change their diets from eating whales to smaller mammals such as seals, sea lions, and sea otters. As a result, orcas are the main reason for the sea otter population decline.
Finally, the otter states that the pollution hypothesis explains the uneven pattern of decline because there is an uneven concentration of pollutants along the coast. However, the professor points out that the uneven decline of population in sea otters depends on the fact that whether orcas live in that location or not. In addition, she mentions that the shallow and rocky locations, which are not easily accessible to orcas, don't show any decline in sea otter population to prove her point.
