Sea otters.
Both the reading and the lecture discuss the decline in the population of the sea otter. The reading states that the most likely cause of the decline is the environmental pollution. However, the lecturer refutes this belief presented in the passage by stating that the most likely cause of the decline is the attacks by the predators.
To begin with, the reading claim that there is a lot of pollution on the Alaskan coast. This is because there is oil rigs and the other sources of industrial chemical, which decreases the otters resistance to the infection, as a result they died. Nevertheless, the lecturer contrasts this idea by pointing out that the pollution theory is weakened by the fact that no one has found the dead sea of washing on the beach.
Secondly, the reading mentions that the other species are declined because of the pollution. As the population of the other sea mammals such as seals and sea lions is also declined. And the orcas has the same effect but the orcas prefer to eat larger prey such as whales. Yet, the lecturer challenges this argument by revealing that the whales obviously prey large animals but they have changed their diet and now eating to the small mammals. She states that the whales are disappeared due to the human hunter and hence only the sea mammals are there in the ocean and hence the orcas are eating small mammal such as seal, sea lion, and sea otter.
Lastly, the reading argues that the population of the sea otter is a decline in some areas and in some areas it is stable. Since the ocean current and the other environmental factors have created this uneven pattern. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this theory by explaining that the place where the sea otter live is accessible to the orcas and hence sea otters have declined. She asserts that the shallow and rocky locations are accessible to the orcas and hence the population of the sea otter is decline because the orcas make sea otters as their prey.
Thus, there is a stark difference between the passage and the lecturer.
