The reading and the lecture are both about the shortening of the workweek of the employees from five days to four days. The author of the reading feels that there are three important benefits of this change for companies, for societies as a whole and for the individual employees as well. However, the lecturer challenges the claims made by author. He is of the opinion that these explanations are not true for several reasons.
To begin with, the author argues that this amendment increases the company's profits. The article mentions that if the companies shorten the workweek, then employees fell rested more. As a result, they become less error-prone worker in their job. Moreover, he adds that company can hire more worker with the same money and can do more jobs than before which increases its profits. This specific argument is challenged by lecturer. The lecturer bases his argument on the idea that even if companies hire more worker, it will be more costly for the companies because the more new worker you hire, the more spending on the training for these workers is. What is more, he claims that hiring new workers also means allocating extra office spaces and extra computer for the new workers and these are important costs to afford for the company.
Secondly, the writer suggest that this change is beneficial for the society as a whole. In the article, it is said that if the workload decreases, then this shortened workload would have to be shifted to other workers and this results in less unemployment. The lecturer, however, rebuts this idea by mentioning that hiring new worker may be more costly for companies rather than being more profitable and also may have no effect on the unemployment. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that companies may expect the same amount of job from workers at the duration of shortened days and this will be more tiring for employees but it won’t effect the unemployment rate in the country.
Finally, the author posits that it is also better for individual employees. In the article it is stated that after this regulation employees can find more time to spend this time with their families and also to spend for pursuing their private interests. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that this change may be risky. He notes that if the workers have less time with their job then it is hard to develop their career for the employees. He also states that under this environment, they may lose the opportunity to promote in the management positions because employers may choose the employees for a managerial position who prefer to working five days to working four days.
