Shrimps

Essay topics:

Shrimps

The article talks about TED (Turle Excluder Device) which are devices to catch shrimps effectively and it's benefits. They are being used instead of trawls which results in other animals being dragged in the net along with shrimps. The author provides three reasons to support their viewpoint. However, the professor explains that althought TED is a great idea they are not that useful and refutes each of the author's claim.

Firstly, the article claims about TED being specifically designed to catch shrimps and not harm or catch any other animal due to the ten centimenter barrier. However, the professor contends that some mid sized turtles still get caught under TED and some lucky shrimps can escape the barrier.

Secondly, the reading posits that TED is being used by all people involved in the shrimping business due to the restriction imposed by Shrimp-Turtle Law. On the other hand the professor argues that many people do not use TED. According to her many people remove it when they are about to put the net in the sea to catch shrimps and it is very difficult to monitor these people when they in the middle of the ocean.

Lastly, the passage says that countries which do no comply with Shrimp Turtle Law are not allowed to sell their products in the United States and that America keeps a tight track on the shrimp import. The professor opposes this by saying that it is very easy for someone to fake documents claiming that they are using TED and hence bypass the law.
