Smart cars
The professor explains the reasons why technology of smart cars doesn't provide clear advantages. The information she presents directly contrasts facts outlined in the reading passage.
First of all, the speaker mentions that because these computer-controlled cars can follow one another closely, the accidents happened will involve more accidents and thereby failing to save lives. On the other hand, the reading specifies that by implementing GPS system and a variety of sensors on cars, the number of accidents will decrease since the cars will automatically control braking and turning to prevent crash with other cars and walls.
Second, regarding highway speed and commuting time, the professor states that using smart cars will not reduce traffic congestion significantly. She backs off this statement by saying that more and more cars enter the roads annually as to corroborate the current traffic situation. Nonetheless, the reading includes the information that in practical, the traffic problems will disappear because the cars follow each other, thus increasing highway speeds and bringing advantage to many people commuting by car.
Last but not least, the speaker points out that smart cars don't make people save money as predicted in the reading. She claims that installing a global positioning system and a wide variety of sensors, however, would add more expenses than the save on harnessing these technologies. However, according to the reading, smart cars will save people much money since by installing these technologies, the drivers can find the most efficient route and save such amount of money on repairs and replacement parts of the cars.
