spreading of zebra mussels from europe to america
Both the reading and the lecture discuss the spreading of zebra mussel from Eastern Europe to North America. The reading states that they bring uncontrollable invasion and serious danger to freshwater fish population by giving three supportive reasons. The professor denies this idea and rejects all the reasons in the reading.
In the first place, the passage claims that it is possible to have unstoppable invasion of the zebra mussel by seeing the history of it. The professor says that this is a true fact but in the past. These days, the people gain good knowledge to control spreading of zebra mussel. In fact, mussels can tolerate the salt of ocean water, and they will die, so the concerning of spreading of mussels by attaching to ship's bottom and going through new canals and following happen is not real.
Secondly, according to passage, mussels can be dominated by entering to a new habitat. The professor disagrees this by stating that it can be true but just for a short time because after a while some birds will feed of zebra mussels and control the population of them.
Thirdly, the reading says that overall fish population can be threatened by zebra mussels in the place where zebra mussels are the dominant creature because they eat the same food eaten by freshwater fish. The professor refutes this by claiming that the mussels bring positive effects to fish along with such a negative effect. They bring water fish a lot nutrient by which the freshwater can increase their population.
