The topic of American-Spanish war is opened for debates.in the reading the author introduces the possible cause of that war. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on this theory.
Firstly, the reading passage STATES that the propaganda was particularly created by a journalist from NY times was the main cause for ASW. However, the professor refuses to blame it on the journalism. Even though he acknowledges that William Hearts' articles affected America's general opinion, he refuses to admit it was the pushing power for that war. Instead, he is convinced that the main reason still unknown.
When it comes to the timing, the professor argues that the hostilities begun before battleship sinking. Moreover, he believes that the military threat was known by American authorities. He points out that they were actually prepared for it. While, the article posits the claim that once the ship sunk, the war actually started off.
Finally, the article insists on the fact that reports and articles that were written in NY times invoked the war. In contrast, the professor debunks the reading passage by explaining that the American military had prepared for war before sinking event. Again the article doesn't mention any of those preparations. And there is no real evidence to back this claim.
In a nutshell, giving the three reasons above, the professor goes against the reading passage.
