Summarize the points made in the lecture , be sure to explain how they answer various problems raised in the reading passage?
The reading passage talks about the disparity involved in the work of a famous dutch painter named Rembrandt. For example, the painting known as Portrait of an Elderly woman in a white Bonnet was actually credited to Rembrandt because of the inherited style of painting and the beautiful expression of the face in the portrait. Some significant points were raised to check if it belonged to Rembrandt or not. Th first problem listed out was the inconsistency in the hat and the coat in dressing of the women wold never have been tolerated by the painter of this stature. Moreover,Rembrandt was known for making detailed portraits that also had effects of light and shadow which appeared doubtful because of the face was illuminated by the black fur collar because of reflection which would indeed absorb light. The rear side of the painting confirmed that the panel was made by joining several small pieces of wood together which was quite odd keeping in mind the previous paintings done by Rembrandt and therefore this painting was removed from the official catalogue of Rembrandt's painting.
However, these false claims were challenged in the lecture, where the lecturer talks about how the committee that was set up for finding an answer to this disparity. The committee after careful examination of the painting concluded that there is disparity in the dressing sense and therefore the first claim was nullified. The second was also rejected because of the c that the hat had material which reflected the light and the face was illuminated because of the light reflected by the hat still indicating that the painting has a role of light and shadows. When the quality and type of wood was tested it was found to be exactly similar to the wood panels that Rembrandt has used in all previous paintings. The extra pieces of wood were attached to add the features of fur collar , the hat to have more interesting portrait developed and thus the third claim was also rejected by the committee.
