The article states that cause and decline of sea otter from California to Alaska is by majorly by pollution and provides three reasons for the support. However, the professor explains that sea utter poulations has been declined by predation rather than pollution and refutes each of the author's reason.
To begin with, the reading claims that oil rigs and the industrial chemicals have caused the pollution. The article mentions water samples on those area revealed the increase of pollution thereby causing the deaths of otter. The professor refutes this point stating that no one has washed across the beaches. Instead, the number of sea utter are declining by predation.
Second, the reading states that other sea mammals other than utter were also declining due to the pollution. The mammals like seals and sea lions were also declining. However the professor says after predation has caused the whales to dimish for predating, the predators are hunting sea otter and other mammals.
Third, the reading says that there was a uneven parttern of otter decline. In some places, the otter population was stable while the other place was declining due to pollution. The professor refutes this point by saying that the population of otter was stable where the sea was sallow and rocky, thus difficult to hunt by predators.
