Summarize the points made in the lecture being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The article is about the humpback whales and their distinct abilities during migration and provides 3 reasons of support. However, the professor in the lecture refutes this argument considering it unconvincing and challenges all the points mentioned in the reading passage.
First and foremost, the reading avers that, whales are intelligent enough to navigate by stars. The professor believes there are flaws in the author's position and oppose this point by saying that there is no real connection between the intelligence and ability. For instance, ducks born with average cognitive ability and still ducks use stars to navigate. Hence, the point from the text can not be supported by evidence.
Secondly, the text outlines that whales always migrate in straight lines. The professor says that this claim is problematic. He explains that migration in line is not easy without external force so, animals must have some external object or force. This marine animal have bio magnitude element in the brain which is sensitive to earth magnetic field, this field works as an external force for them and the element suggest animals to orient themselves according to the field. Thus, this point in the passage can be considered invalid.
Finally, the author brings this argument to close by suggesting that they exhibit unusual behavior called spy hopping. Not surprisingly, lecturer rejects this point by indicating that by spy hopping they are not navigating for example sharks they follow the animals in this way which they want to prey, Therefore, this point from the passage is faulty.
It is quite visible that author and lecturer hold conflicting views about the behavior of whales.
