The reading is about the art movement called Pre Raphaelite brotherhood which was criticized because of the fascination in medieval culture as well as depiction of religious theme. The lecturer agrees with the idea and supports each of the concept mentioned in the article.
First, the author begins by stating that Pre Raphaelite at the time was considered as archaic in art. However, the brotherhood believed medieval culture held unique spiritual truth that faded over the course of time. The lecture corroborates Pre Raphaelite school was criticized because of it’s composition, sharp focus and absence of shadow.
Secondly, according to the article realism stressed the independent observation of nature yet Pre Raphaelite was keen on close observation of nature. The professor mentions, the landscape painting of Ruskin, accuracy of plant and it’s minute details attracted Pre Raphaelite . Furthermore, he held the believe that artist must be true to nature and rendered to what was seen and understood imaginatively on the canvas. These ideas affected the Pre Raphaelite and in return gained the appreciation for Ruskin.
Finally, the Pre Raphaelite brotherhood dissolved yet some of them remained close friends and collaborated for the renewal of brotherhood. The professor mentions that the journey of Willian Holman to near east provided the aid for the expansion of Pre Raphaelite precepts and was described on the painting “The escape boat”.
