The lecture and the reading passage have contradictory views about Robert E. Peary's Arctic Explorer and reaching to the North Pole of the earth.
Reading passage supports the given statement and gives mainly three reasons to support that Peary's claim of reaching the North Pole. First of all National Geographic Society has formed a committee to investigate Peary's records and equipment which later supported his claim. Secondly, recent attempt was made by the British explorer named Tom Avery to reach the north pole with the same kind of dogsled and the same number and breed of dogs as Peary had and he did reached in same time as Peary did. Thirdly, Shadow of surf was measured in his photograph taken at the north pole which exactly matches to the surfs position as it should have been on the day Peary reached there.
But lecture casts doubt on the reading passage by telling that the information in the given passage is not Convincing and has no strong evidence. Lecture argues and rejects the information by giving following reasons. First argument is on the committee that was formed to investigate Peary's work. Lecturer argues that the committee was made up of Peary's close friends who have also funded him for his journey and thus they have not investigated carefully and their report was biased. Secondly, Lectures tries to differentiate the journey of Avery and Peary by lighting the facts that Avery has not carried is food with him and so was carrying much lesser weight that Peary. other thing is weather was much favorable during Avery's journey unlike Peary's journey. Third doubt casted by the lecture is on the photograph which is nearly 100 years old probably taken by old unfocused camera. The level of accuracy was less and photo was faded and shadow is blurred over a t time. Photo does not prove to be taken exactly at the north pole.
