Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they opposes the specific points made in the reading passage
According to the reading passage, printed encyclopedias are better than online encyclopedias because online encyclopedias have many problems. However, the professor in the lecture opposes reading’s suggestions and refutes each of its points.
First of all, the professor argues that we will never be able to find really comprehensive reference work accurately on reading or on online encyclopedias. However, factual material can easily be corrected online but in case of reading encyclopedia these errors remain for decades. Therefore, the reading’s claim that traditional encyclopedias are usually written by trained experts and it is hard to find any errors in them is not true.
Second, the professor challenged that online encyclopedias are reliable, because most of the crucial facts in them, are in read only format and hackers cannot make changes in these articles. Besides this, they hire special editors who monitors these changes made to the article and eliminates those which are malicious. This disputes the reading which claims that online encyclopedias are unreliable because hackers and other users can make changes in them.
Finally, the professor states that traditional encyclopedias have limited space and decision for choosing the topics in them, is in the hands of groups of academic people, who don’t add diverse in articles, and as a result not many people attracted to read them. On the other hand, online encyclopedias have diversity of topics which is the strongest advantage of these encyclopedias.
