The article states that a mandatory policy offering a shortened workweek will improve the economy of the company as well as individuals and provide three reasons for support. however, the professor refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that shortened workweek will increase company profits as employees feel more rested, alert and hiring more staff would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees. the professor refutes this point by saying that hiring more employees will force the company to spend more money. he states that more workers require more working spaces, computers and also health benefits. training should be provided for the new employees which increases the additional cost of the company which cut's into company profit.
second, the article posits that the unemployment rate will be reduced if the policy is implemented.however, the professor says that the company might seek various alternative options and the employment rate might not be increased. According to the professor, the company might ask employees to work overtime to make up the differences and if this happens the employment rate would not increase. Additionally, the company might raise the expectation from employees that the work done in 5 days by an employee can be done by the employee in 4 days. if this happens no additional job is created.
third, the reading says that the individuals who want to work for a 4-day workweek will improve the quality of their lives by spending free time with their families and pursuing private interests. the professor opposes this point by explaining that those employees who want to work four days a week will have more chances not being promoted and of losing job during the economic downtown and decreases job ability and harm chances for career.
