TOEFL integrated writing: work a four-day week.

In this set of materials, the reading claims that the companies should offer four days work to their
employees, which provides benefits for whole economy, companies as well as individual
employees. However, in the lecture, the professor casted doubt on what is presented in the text and
refused every of the reasons given in the reading.
First, it is clearly stated in the reading that the company profits will effectively increase as
employees perform better in their work thanks to more resting time. However, the professor
disagrees with this idea. He explains from another angle that more employees leads to more costs
for the companies, because they need to spend more time on training and medical. Furthermore,
more office spaces and computers have to be provided for the additional number of employees,
which also furthers the costs. Considering these aspects, the more number of employees not only
help the companies but also harm their economic.
In addition, the professor disagrees with the point that four-day workweek decreases
unemployment rate. He point out that the significant rate of unemployment cannot be compensated
by a less number of jobs. Moreover, the four-day workweek policy will not provide new jobs
because the companies may force employees to do the works of five days within four days. This
can result in more pressure on employees.
Finally, although it is mentioned in the reading that the life quality of employees will be raised as
they have more free time, the professor provides some evidences to oppose this point of view. He
states that less number of working hours leads to instability in job situation. In particular, the
employees with four-day workweek have to face the risk of losing their job. This situation may
encourage them to prefer five-day workweek instead of accepting the risk of unemployment.
