The passage claims that appearance of university professors as guests on television news programs can be beneficial for the professors, university as well as the for the general public. However, the lecturer says that appearance of professors on television programs has negative consequences and refutes the points stated by the passage.
First, the lecturer states that among the fellow professors the reputation of the professor who gives appearance on television is of an entertainer and not of a serious scholar. Moreover, this professor might not be invited to important discussion, conferences and would not receive funding for his research project. And this counters the argument in the article that professors benefit for appearing on television.
Second, the lecturer opposes the statement that university also benefit from such appearances, by stating that such appearances consume a lot of time, for instance, time for makeup, time for traveling and time for preparation. Instead, the lecturer says that this time could be well utilized by the professor in helping the students, attend to university business and also do some research.
Third, the reading posits that public also gains from such expert insight. However, the lecturer asserts that television does not require serious content and the content presented is not different from the content presented by a tv reporter who has done some research. Therefore, this content is not as insightful as the viewers thought.
