TOEFL T P O 10 - Integrated Writing Task

There is evidence that sea otter population is decreasing in specific regions, due to the two possible reasons of pollution and predators. While the article suggests that the main reason is pollution, the professor in the lecture supports that the cause for the population decline is the sea otters’ predators.

Oil rigs and industry’s chemical pollution have affected the sea animals and caused a decline in the sea otter population according to the article. Whereas, the professor says that there is actually no dead bodies in the water, which means that their population decline can only be possible if some other sea animals were hunting them. Hence, she supports that predation is a better explanation.

It is being claimed that not only the sea otters but other sea animal as well, are disappearing. The article uses this fact as an evidence for sea otters being killed by pollution. Meanwhile the professor tells that whales are caught by the humans, which makes ocras look out for something else to eat. So, they eat other small sea animals including sea otters. Thus, again, she supports the idea that the attacks are the major problem.

The final point is about the uneven populations of sea otters in different regions. While the article suggests that the concentration of pollutants are at different levels along the coast, the professor says that this is not the actual reason. According to her, since ocras are hunting the sea otters, in the shallow and rocky places which are hard for ocras to live, there is a higher population of sea otters.

Even though the decline in sea otter population is the main concern of both the article and the lecture, the main reasons they give are different. The article supports that pollution is the major factor by stating that the decline in many species and the unequal population distribution of the sea otters could only have been caused by pollution, whereas the professor explains that the main reason for sea otters’ population decline is caused by their predator ocra.
