The reading and the lecture are both regarding the declining trend in literature. The author of the reading asserts that, this is an unfortunate situation whereas the lecturer have opposed this point of view. The lecturer casts doubts on the main points made in the reading by providing three examples.
Preeminently, according to the author, the intellectual stimulation provided by the literature cannot be replaced by anything else. In addition, the author expresses that literature helps us grow in numerous ways and many trending books of today's time such as self help books are not that intellectual nor of that high standards. However, the lecturer refutes this point. Furthermore, she points out that there are many books written in context of science and politics which may not be a part of literature but, are of high quality well written books and exercises our imagination in a broad spectrum.
By the same token, the reading states that decline in literature is leading to deterioting the culture in general. Nevertheless, the lecturer disputes this argument. She expresses that culture is much more than literature, there is music, movie and many more things that are considered in the category of culture. She affirms that there are many forms of culture with variety of expressions and many of them are much more direct than literature.
In winding up, the reading contends that there is lack of audience which in turn leads to less support to talented writers. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that there is author's fault too in this situation. She points out that books available today are difficult to understand and many earlier readers would also not prefer to read them.
