Both the reading and the lecture are about the use of ethanol fuel as an alternative to gasoline. The author of the reading believes that ethanol can not substitutes gasoline and provides three reasons. On the other hand, the lecturer states that the authors` reasons are not convincing.
First, the lecturer points out that the use of ethanol fuel will not lead to global warming. He says that even though ethanol can release carbon monoxide into the atmosphere, ethanol is made from corn and sugar plants, and in order for these plant to grow they use photosynthesis which remove carbon dioxide from the air. As a result, ethanol usage will not add up any significant amount to carbon dioxide in the air. Because of this the professor refuses to except the author`s claim that ethanol, just like gasoline, can cause global warming.
Second, the professor explains large scale production of ethanol will not reduce the amount of food available for animals. He states that the production of ethanol uses only cellulose which is in a different part of plants that animals do not eat. This disputes the second claim made in the reading that the production of large amount of ethanol will decrease the amount of plants available for animals.
Finally, the professor puts forth the idea that ethanol an compete with gasoline in term of price. He asserts that with the increase of the ethanol production, it`s price will drop down. He brings up findings of research that show if the future production of ethanol goes up to triple the production now, it`s price will go down by forty percent. This cast doubt on the third reason provided in the reading that without government`s tax subside ethanol price will increase dramatically.
