How the humpback whales migrating long distance is still in question. It was argued that thees whales may navigate by the stars like the sailors did. In that these whales with high intelligence can swim in straight lines during the migration, sometimes they jump over the water to look at the stars, which is known for spy-hopping, there are almost no marine animals have this behavior. While the lecturer rebutts the reasons proposed in the passage.
To begin with, there is no relavance between the intelligence and the navigation ability. There are some low-intelligence animals which also can navigate like the birds and ducks, thus this reason is not convicing enough.
In addtion, the whales ablity of swimming in straight lines is not accounted by their looking at the stars. Though some animals use the landmark to make the position. The humpback whales can use their speciall organism to sense the Earth magnetic field, this is the reason why they can migrate in straight lines ,rather than looking at the stars.
Thirldy, there is no connection with the spy-hopping and looking at stars by the humpback whales. Actually, according to the lecturer, there are other animals like sharks can do spy-hopping, while they need to jump like this because of huangting for food rather than migrating in tha they do not leave their homes.
In all, the lecturer contends that even the theory that the humpback whales migrating long distance by stars navigation is fascinating, the reasons for the theory is not convincing.
