TOEFL T P O 50- Integrated Writing Task
Both reading and lecture discuss problems and solutions of sending humans to Mars. The author claims that this project would require solving an array of problems the Moon mission did not have to face and provides three reasons of support. The professor states that the mission is challenging, but there are many ways to solve it and refutes each reason.
First, the reading explains that round trip to Mars and back takes at least two years, and it is difficult to bring enough supplies such as food. The speaker contends this idea by saying that there is a kind of plant called hydroponics that can help astronomers. Roots of these plants grow in the water, and it does not need soil. They need little space to live, and also they can recycle water; therefore, people can drink it. Hydroponics can also release oxygen and make fresh air.
Second, the passage states that astronauts would be in the zero-gravity environment for many months on the Mars mission, which has a negative effect on the human body. The lecturer denies this point and claims that there are many space stations in the space, and they can spend many months in the mentioned places. Also, they learn many techniques to live in zero gravity without a problem.
Third, the author describes that astronauts on a mission to Mars would be exposed to a dangerous level of space radiation, which is emitted by the Sun. The professor opposes this idea and explains that radiation will not be dangerous all the time. The dangerous radiation will happen occasionally. Since astronauts have space crafts, they can monitor all the solar radiation by the Sun. The space crafts have a shield. Astronauts can work on the project, and if they realize that radiations are increased, can stay on space crafts until dangerous radiations pass.
