TOEFL TPO 32- Integrated Writing Task
The passage discusses strange noises called quackers. The source of these unfamiliar sounds moves with great speed under the water. The text provides three reasons for the possible sources. However, the professor rejects these reasons and provides others reasons. She tinks the text' reasons are impossible.
First, the passage suggest these soundes belonged to male anf female whales. These animals produce these sounds during their courtship ritual and mating. While, the lecture asserts the mentioned theory in the first look seems possible. But by considering details this reason is impractical. So, she states that whales hold their ritual on the surface of the water. Consequently, the submarines cannot hear these voices.
Second, the text contends that maybe the source of the sounds is a giant squid. Howeve, the professor refutes the idea by explaining that these sounds started in the 1960s and continiuing until the 1980s. While, these giant squids are alwayse present in their area. So, they must always hear these sounds and interrupting is not reasonable. Third, the text describes there is a possibility the source of these sounds is related to the forign submarines. But because they use advanced technology for muting the sounds and hiding the submarine, finding the source of the sounds is hard. The professor rejects this idea by explaining the source of these sounds moves quickly and moving so fast is not practical for a submarine. Furtheremore, there is another reason, changing the direction in fast speed is not an option for a submarine. As a result, the text's reason is false.
