Applying compound and complex sentences in our speech and/or writing will enhance our score in English language test (i.e. TOEFL, IELTS, etc). Here is some methods to build such sentences.
Clause: a statement that has one subject and one verb
Example: I go.
There are two different clauses:
• Independent: I usually go to university by bus.
• Dependent: If I were a doctor,
Sentences are built using clauses. Based on the type and number of clauses, a sentence can be regarded as:
• Simple: A sentence that contains just one independent clause (I usually go to university by bus).
• Compound: A sentence that consists of two independent clauses.
• Complex: A sentence that contains one independent and one dependent clause.
We make compound sentences using connectors. Connectors are:
• Coordinators
• Correlative Conjunctions
