The reading states that there are some problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work by Rembrandt and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor states that even though the reasons are partly true but after a thorough examination it will be understood that the painting is indeed a work by Rembrandt and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the article states that there is an inconsistency in the painting which makes it impossible to be a work by Rembrandt. The professor says that the fur collar mentioned in the article was not an original part of the painting and it was added to it about 100 years later. He states that somebody did it to increase the value of the painting.
Second, the author states that Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow but in this painting these elements do not fit together. The lecturer claims that in the original painting the fur collar would reflect light and illuminate the face. She adds that the light and the shadow are realistic just as expected.
Third, the reading claims that the examination of the back of the reading indicates that it was painted on several pieces of wood glued together which is not what Rembrandt usually did. The lecturer contends that the painting is enlarged to seem more grand and more valuable, but the original one was drawn on a single wood and it was portrayed exactly on the wood of the same tree which Rembrandt always used to record his art of painting.
