The lecture and the reading passage both discuss about the painting of an elderly woman by Rembrandt. While the reading casts a doubt on the authenticity of being actual work by Rembrandt, the lecture refutes this, saying that it is Rembrandt creation.
First of all, the reading claims the dressing style of the woman in the portrait is a mismatch. Woman is wearing a cap usually wore by servants while the fur collar on her dress contrasts her economic status. Rembrandt is known for his attention to details. However, the lecture argues that a careful inspection of the colors used in the painting revealed that the collar was not part of the original painting. In fact it was added 100 years after the painting was created to increase the value of the painting.
In addition, the reading makes an argument that Rembrandt is considered as a master of light and shadow in his paintings. The portrait is a misfit to what he is known for. Face of the woman is illuminated by light below but the fur collar below her face is of dark color and light should be absorbed by that collar instead of reflecting it. The lecture counters this point by stating removal of fur collar revealed the original light colored dress worn by the woman and explains the illumination on her face.
Lastly the reading passage points out that Rembrandt used wooden panels for painting, but the portrait have several glued panels at the back and this questions the authenticity of the painting. The lecture refutes the claim by stating the panels were glued together at the same time the fur collar was added. Moreover, the professor says the original panel used for the portrait is from the same tree, Rembrandt used for his other work.
