The reading and the speaker discuss dinosaurs were endotherms from different perspectives. The author of the reading believes that dinosaurs could maintain an internal temperature and gives three reasons to support his idea. However, the speaker casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He says that none of those notions are convincing.
First of all, the author of the reading points out that people have found the fossils of dinosaurs in Polar Regions, where only endotherm animals could live. This point is challenged by the speaker. He restates the fact that in the past the weather in polar locations was much warmer than today. Moreover, like other animals during winter dinosaurs could migrate to the warmer places to live or they could hibernate as well.
Secondly, the author of the reading contends that the legs of the dinosaurs were located under their bodies, which indicate that they were endotherms. The speaker rebuts this argument by saying that the legs of the dinosaurs were positioned under their bodies in order to support their giant bodies.
Finally, the author of the reading states that the bones of dinosaurs contain structures called Haversian canals, which allow the dinosaurs to grow quickly and it is an important evidence to demonstrate that dinosaurs were endotherms. The speaker, on the other hand, opposes this point by speaking that besides the Haversian canals, the bones structure of dinosaurs also contain growth rings, which enabled dinosaurs to grow rapidly. The growth rings in dinosaurs prove that during the winter dinosaurs stopped increasing their size. Meanwhile, endotherm animals can develop their shape during cold weather as well.
