The materials are concerned with the question that how the 'great houses' of Chaco people was used for. The passage supposes three theories for the question. In respond, the lecture casts doubts on these theories, saying that those are unconvincing.

First, the passage tells about the theory that the great houses of Chaco people were residential places. However, the lecture argues that the houses dose not have enough fire place for about 100 families living there. This seriously casts doubt the theory.

The passage continues to explain the second theory about the Chaco's great houses that those were used to stored food supplies. The lecture, again, contest this. He says the theory was unsupported because there was not any maize remained in the houses to show that there might be a food storing place.

Finally, the passage mentioned to the theory that the Chaco great houses were used to be ceremonial places. On the other hand, the lecture argues that the mound left in these houses also contains other deposits which prove that they might simply be a building or something else instead of a ceremonial place
