The lecturer imposes his doubts on the validity of the theories mentioned in the passage about the Chaco Canyon in New Mexico.
As per the passage, the first theory suggests that the the structure of the Chaco Canyon appears similar to the famous apartment buildings of Taos, New Mexico. Because of this it is assumed that the structure supported a population of almost 100 people. However, the lecturer refutes to this theory by stating that in such huge structures there were no fire places found to support the living of 100 people. The only fire places that were found were to support only 10 family members. Therefore, Chao Canyon was not a residential area.
Second theory suggests that huge buildings were also used to hold food supplies such as maize as the structures were ideal for the storage of maize for long period of time. The lecturer disagrees to this theory too by saying that there is no supportive evidence that confirms the presence of maize in the area. Because, no remains of the grain were found in the excavation process.
Lastly, the third theory states that the Pablo Alto that is next to the houses served as a ceremonial site. Because pot remains were found there that is presumed to be there because of ceremonial gatherings that included meal preparation and serving. However, the lecturer states that there were not only remains of pots found but also stones, sand and other construction materials. Which means that Pablo Alto could have been a construction site and the pots that were found there were probably thrown by the workers.
