The author states that there are three hypotheses on how the Chaco structures were used by the native people for various purposes. However, the professor is not in favor of these theories and argues on the points made in the passage.
First, the reading mentions that they could be used as residential buildings as they are similar to the apartment buildings at Taos. However, the speaker refutes this point by indicating that although there are rooms to live for hundreds of families but there are fewer fire places that can fulfill the needs of daily cooking is only for ten families at the most. This contraindicates as to what is given in the passage.
Second, the author tells that another idea is that these buildings could be used to store crops such as grain maize for long periods. To counter the author’s view point, lecturer explains that during excavation, archeologists did not find any evidences that support this notion. He further clears his point by telling that if they were used for storage purpose then some proofs such as remains of big containers or grain on the floor should have been found during excavation but there is no such proof.
Third, the passage suggests that it might be possible that the buildings could have been used for special ceremonies as large numbers of broken pots are found at the site. But the lecturer cast doubts on this notion as well. He states that there are many more items have been found at the site along with broken pots that is building material such as stones, sand and construction tools. This is an evidence of some construction going on at the site and broken pots could be the left over
