The reading and the listening passages are both about Chaco Canyon in New Mexico which is massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms. While the reading passage provides three theories explaining what is the building used for, the listening contends that these theories are not convincing.
First of all, the reading passage mentions that the building is used for residential. This is mainly because it is similar to apartment buildings at Taos New Mexico, in which many people live there. However, the lecturer contends that yes it is true that it looks like a native American house, but a house that hundreds of people live in needs many fireplaces for cooking, and there were only a few of them in the building.
Secondly, the author claims that the used the building for storing food such as maize. Also, the size of the house looks suitable for storing. On the other hand, the lecturer states that this theory is not supportive, and if they use it for storing maize, they left some containers or maize behind but there is nothing. Thus, this theory is not supported.
Thirdly, the writer mentions that they used it as a ceremonial center. Similar to Pueblo Alto which is a ceremonial center that native American used to celebrate and eats and they leave behind some pots as well as food. The professor casts doubt on this theory by saying this is not supported because Pueblo Alto contains not only broken pots but also other constructed materials suggested that this is a trash field. Therefore, this theory is not supported.
To conclude, the lecturer debunks each theory that the author provided.
