TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

The article and the lecture are both about massive, archaic stone buildings which are located Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. The author of the article explains three main theories about these structures’ usage. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that none of the author’s claims are well supported.

First, the author points out that the buildings were used as residential. It is mentioned that these buildings looks like “apartment buildings” at Taso which was contructed by more recent Southwest societies. The points are challenged by the lecturer. He says that outside of the buildings look similar, but, inside cast serious doubt on the theory. Furthermore, he argues that if primary usage of the building were be residential, there would have been more fireplaces. However, there are only a few fireplaces.

Second, the author contends that Chaco structures were just big cellar. The article notes that grain maize was the main harvest of the Chaco people, and this harvest could be stored for long time. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggested that this theory is unsupported by evidence. He elaborates on this by mentioning that excavations which did not uncover maize residuals and big containers.

Third, the author states that the buildings were used as ceremonial centers. The article establishes that excavations unearthed numerous broken pots. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that this theory is not well supported. According to professor, excavation area contains a lot of stuff such as sand, stone and other meterials. He states that pots could be just a regular thrash.
