The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about wood companies adopting ecocertification label. According to the reading passage, it is not likely that wood companies, in The United States, adopt this certification by providing several supporting reasons. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubts about the reading passage's arguments. He thinks that the wood companies and their consumers would accept this improvement in a positive way, and gives some support ideas for his claim.
Fist of all, the reading passages claims that consumers are overwhelmed with advertising and it is difficult for them to distinguish the good from the bad ones. Thus, a ecocertification label would not be an important factor to decide which product to buy. On the contrary, the lecture rescues the idea of a well informed consumers that can understand an advertising and the benefit that this advertising is communicating. In consequence, the label will produce a difference in the habit of the consumer at the moment to decide which product to buy.
Second, the reading passage explains that the certification demands an extra cost to the companies, and that cost would be transferred to the final cost of the product. Thus, the clients, that are price oriented, would discard those products labelled, because its higher cost. The lecture refutes this idea explaining that although the consumers care about prices, they consider the benefit-cost also, and that only a 5% of difference in the price, charged because the label, will not be an impediment for choosing a better product. On the other hand, American consumer are more aware of the care of the environment.
Finally, the reading passage argues that foreign market is not attractive enough to the local wood companies, and the competition are not a good motivation to get the ecocertification. On the contrary, the lecture reforces the idea of an unfair foreign competition that could be introduced in the local market and that already have the ecocertification.
