TPO 08- Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including kings and writers, his memoir has become a valuable historical source about European society in the eighteenth century. However, some critics have raised doubts about the accuracy of the memoir. They claim that the Chevalier distorted or invented many events in the memoir to make his life seem more exciting and glamorous than it really was.
The article states that critic claim that the chevalier distorted or invented many event in his memoir, and provide three reasons of support. however, the professor explains that memoir was acuurate and reliable, and refutes each of authors reasons.
First, the reading claims that chevalier actualy was poor and pretended to be wealthy and made parties and gambling to show this by borrowing money from swiss merchant. the professor refutes this point by saying that chevalier was not poor and he was selling his own properities to cover his actions and he bowrroed money until he recives money from selling.
Second, the article posits that the conversations with voltair was not accurate because its wrote many years after conversatons in memoir. however, the professor says that he wrote notes every night after conversations and kept notes for several yeas then used them in memoir .
Third, the reading says that his escaping from prison from sealing by piece of metal is not acuurate and jailers were bribed by politician to release him. the professor opposes this point by eplaining that where were other prisoners whom had friend with more powerfull politicians and non of them released. she states that soon after chevalier escaped the adminstrative of jail ordered to repair the sealing.
