The reading and the listening are both about the pros and cons of using hydrogen fuel engine in practise. The author of the passage believes that the fuel cell based vehicles are nonpolluting, cheap and uses renewable resources. However the lecturer casts doubt on then claims raised by the author by arguing that the above statement is incorrect.
Firstly, the author of the passage points that the fuel cell uses water and renewable source as their raw material whereas the petrol engine use non renewable source for powering as such the former is reasonable and easy to obtain. The lecturer challenges this. He contends that the fuel engine cannot be easily obtained. He elaborates this by stating that it requires pure liquid hydrogen which is obtained through a extensive cooling technique to a temperature of -53 degree.
Secondly, the author notes that pollution problem does not exist for hydrogen engine because it emits only water which is harmless whereas combustion engine emits carbon dioxide which is detrimental to air. This is rebutted by the lecturer. He states that factories producing hydrogen is more polluting and thus create a lot of pollution issues.
Finally, the author claims that the fuel cell engines are more economical than combustion engines. She suggests that only half fuel energy is required to go the same distance as that of a petrol automobile. This is contradicted by the lecturer. He asserts that the manufacturing process of fuel engine is expensive since it requires platinum. Furthermore, he explains that platinum is is a rare and expensive material in its absence hydrogen is not produced as such negates the statement of cost saving.
To conclude, the lecturer cast doubt on the authors statements.
