TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task

Based on the given materials, the article as well as lecture discuss the sea otter which is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America, and their populations commenced dwindling off the Alaska coast in a few years ago. The author states that environmental pollution and predator’s attacks are the two reasons experts have found for explanation declining of otter and remarked that environmental pollution is the more viable factor for this phenomenon.
Initially, the author says that there are known sources such as oil rigs and other sources of industrial chemical pollution along the Alaska coast. The water samples showed that the chemical level of the sea was increased. Therefore otter’s diminishing could be proved. However, the lecturer explains that no one found any dead sea otter washing off Alaska, and they had been killed and eaten by predators; consequently, they could not wash up the shore.
Second, the writer proclaims that other sea mammals, for instance, sea lions and seals were also diminishing. So, it concluded that environmental pollution affected all of the mammals in the ecosystem. Yet again, the speaker underscores that human hunters make whales disappeared. Accordingly, orcas changed their diet to survive and fed on smaller mammals like an otter. It caused diminishing otters.
The final point of contention between the reading and listening passages is the various climate across every location. The author thinks there was the uneven pattern of declining otter in a wide array of sea locations in Alaskan. So, the ocean currents and other environmental factors may be affected by pollution. On the other hand, the speaker explains that there were locations with different accessibility. Furthermore, a few otters lived in inaccessible areas because they wanted to live in rocky and shallow places. Rocky and shallow places were not attributed to orcas' body size.
