The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about the decline of otter population by giving three support reasons about how the pollution, and not the predators action, is causing the decline. On the other hand, the lecture challenges the reasons exposed by the reading passage, one by one. According to the lecturer, the predators are the real cause of the decreased number of otters.
First of all, the reading passage states how pollution affects otter population by provoking illness and infections to the animals. On the contrary, the lecture argues that there is no evidence of dead animals found on the cost. Moreover, this lack of dead bodies supports the idea of predators as the main cause of the decline of the otter population. By the same token, predators would eat the animal without leaving any trace of it.
Second, according to the lecture, big mammals, as orcas, could have changed their habits of hunting including small mammals in their diet, and not only big mammals as seals and sea lions. This argument refutes the point states by the reading passage.
Finally, the lecture explains that the uneven pattern of otter decline is coincident to the possibility of the orcas to approach to areas of deep water and the impossibility to access to shallow water. Thus, the lecture disagrees with the reading passage that supports the pollution as a factor of otter population decline.
