The reading explains the decline in sea otters with the help of hypothesis based on pollution caused by the nearby industries, while on the other hand the listening section weakens it by explaining this decline with the help of predatory hypothesis.
The first reason presented by the listening section is that, the dead sea Otters are not found anywhere around the coast, which clearly indicates that they have been eaten up by their predators. This reason undermines the reasoning put forth by the reading section that, the cause is the pollution caused by known sources located nearby the coasts.
The second reason following it stated by the listening section is that, the Orcas could be the casue since they are predators of large whales and whales have migrated to another regions, forcing the Orcas to hunt other available species which include sea Otters and others. It again refutes the claim made in the reading section that, the environmental pollution has caused declination in other species as well.
The final reason of listening suggests that, the uneven reduction in the sea Otters' population is due to the location of Orcas, because the Orcas are giant and they cannot hunt in the shallow waters, leaving the population of Otters located there unharmed, while reducing the number of Otters located in deep seas where they are easily accessible to Orcas. This casts a doubt on the point cited out by author of the reading section that, the uneven declination is explained by the environmental factors such as tides.
