The reading and lecture both discuss the possible explanations of sea otter decline. While the reading provides three explanations to support the theory of the environmental pollution that caused sea otter decline, the professor refutes, says that the predation is the possible explanation of sea otter decline.
Firstly, the reading states that the pollution is the cause behind that decline because the chemical pollution decreased the otter's capability to resist the life threatening infections. So, many sea otter killed. However, the professor questions this idea by pointing out that the pollution theory was weak because there was not died otters washed out on the beach. In fact, it is hard to find the otter that killed by predators washed out on the beach. So, the predition was the reason of sea otter decline.
Secondly, the article shows that there was many other species already declined due to the environmental pollution like seals and sea lions. Moreover, orcha predators are not the cause. This is because orchas prefer large prey. Nevertheless, the speakers argues this point by explaning that due to human hunters many whales disappered. So, the orcha species changed their diet to the small species like sea sdeals and sea lions. As a result, these species declined
Finally, the reading avers that the uneven pattern of otter decline due to the unequal concentration of pollutants along the coast. On the other hand, the professor contradicts this notion by saying that the uneven predation is the casue behind the sea otter decline. This is because there is many areas are not accessible to the orcha predators like the rocky and shallow areas . So, in these areas the sea otter did not decline.
