Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made reading passage.

declining the population of sea otter in the western coast of North America from California to Alaska

Both the lecture and the lecture are about the explanations of the decline of the sea otters, which lives along waters of westen coast of North America, from California to Alaska. The lecturer claim that the best explanation of sea otter decline is predation rather than pollution. However, the reading passage refutes that claim by saying that the environmental pollution is a major factor of the sea otter reduction in number.

First and foremost, the professor mention that there is no body that could find dead otters on the shore because the preditors have eaten them. Therefore, the number is declining and their is no singe of dead otters found anywhere. Nevertheless, this opposes the artical, which states that the polution of water with chemicals has caused the reduction of the otters population.

Secondly, the lecturer points out that sea mammals such as seals and sea lions are decline because the humans have overhunted them. This does not mean that because of the sea otters have decline other's sea mammals have to be declined as well. On the other hand, the reading casts doubt on this point by mentioning that otters like many other sea mammals have been reduced in number because of the same effect of enviromental pollution, since usually affects the entire ecosystem.

Finally, the speaker disagree with the reading's suggestion that the pollution could explain the uneven pattern of otter decline. Therefore, their number is stable in some places and in some other places is low. The teacher opposes this suggestion by stating that otters have a big body, they swim in the deep levels of the sea. Consequently, we could not find them close to the shallow levels of the ocean. This means that sea otters could not be found everywhere. As a result, this point do not prove that otters are declined because of the pollution, but because of the depredation.
