The article states that one of the recently published paintings is attributable to Jane Austen's full-length portrait, whereas before that only existed a rather amateurish sketch of her. The lecture, on the other hand, explains that the shreds of evidence provided by the reading is not convincing regarding the validity of the painting and refutes each of the reasons stated by the author.

First, the reading explains that the family of Jane Austen has approved of the painting; that is, the subject of the portrait is indeed her. However, the professor refutes this point by mentioning that Jane Austen passed away seventy years ago. Therefore, his currently alive relatives and descendants could not have seen her in person to authorize the painting.

Second, the article mentions the resemblance between the authorized sketch and the published full-length painting, that is both of them are depicting the famous novel writer. However, the lecture contends that the subject of both paintings could be one of Jane's relatives. He mentions that the Austen family was a large one, and any of her cousins could look like her. In fact, some are to believe that the subject is one of jane's descendant niece.

Third, the reading uses the painter, Ozias Humphry, as the evidence, that is the affluent family of Austen was among those who could afford such an expensive artist. Also, the painting style of the portrait is similar to Humphry's style. The lecturer opposes this point by stating that the method is the only evidence for this limited claim, whereas there are pieces of evidence that the painting could have not to be created in the time that Jane was a teenager. This is because the background canvas was not available in Austen's town by the time she was twenty-seven, and no longer a teenager. So, the painting is, at its best, a few years younger than what the author states.
