TPO-12 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading passage and the lecture both about Jane Austin's portrait. The author of the passage believes that the girl in the portrait was Jane Austin when she was young. The lecturer casts serious doubts on the claims made in the article. He says that all evidence in the passage is questionable.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that the girl in the portrait is Jane because her family clearly recognized it as her portrait. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that Austin's family gave permission to use the letters of the author in 1882, that is about seventy years after Jane's death. Furthermore, he points out that their family members who gave the permission would never actually seen the author.
Secondly, the reading passage discusses that the face in the portrait clearly resembles Cassandra's sketch of Jane Austin. He says that the details in the portrait are similar to the sketch made by Cassandra. This argument is rebutted by the speaker. She acknowledges that Austin's family is very large and the girl in the portrait could be her distant niece. She elaborates on this by mentioning that the girls in Austin's family have similar face structure as Austin.
Finally, the reading article posits that the painting was made by Humphrey, a society portrait painter was active in the late 1780s, that is the period when Jane was a teenager. The lecturer, on the other hand, mentions that the canvas was sold by William led, who did not sell their canvas at that time when Austin was a teenager. He puts forth to the idea that William sold his canvas when Austin Was 27 years old, clearly older than the girl in the painting.
In summary, while both the reading passage and the classroom discussion present the evidence with regards to the painting, a significant amount of evidence supports the points of the lecturer.
