According to the passage, a full-length portrait belongس to an English novelist, Jane Austen. The passage provides three reasons to support this idea. However, the lecture challenges each point made in the passage.
First, the passage explains that the Jane Auston’s family believed that the portrait was Jane’s portrait and they let the portrait to be used in an edition of her letter. On the other hand, the lecturer explains that Jane’s family members, who accepted the portrait as her portrait, they have never seen her before and cannot be certain about their opinion. Indeed, they have justified truth of the portrait 70 years after her death.
Second, the author of the passage claims that the adult girl in the portrait looks like the teenage girl that was painted by her amateur sister. In fact, the author mentions her shape of the face, nose and other parts of her face to prove this resemblance. However, the lecture contradicts this point. The lecturer asserts that the girl in the painting by Jane’s sister can be one of Jane’s niece as she was a teenager at that time.
Third, the passage attributes this portrait to Ozais Humphrey, a professional painter who would be chosen by a wealthy family like Jane’s family. On the contrary, the lecturer gives evidence that proves the painting does not belong to Jane. In fact, the stamp used in the painting was sold be a William Leg, who did not start his job in England until Jane was 27. Thus, the portrait, which shows a teenage girl, does not belong to Jane.
