Endotherms are animals which can retain their body temperature regardless of their environment temperature. Although dinosaurs were conceived not to be Endotherms for a long period of time, the reading passage presents three reasons to prove that dinosaurs are Endotherms. However, the lecture challenges each point made in the passage by providing clarifying information.
First of all, the passage considers dinosaurs as endotherms since dinosaurs fossils have been found in Polar regions, where it is believed that only Endotherms could survive. However, the lecturer challenges this idea by explaining that polar regions were warmer during the time when dinosaurs lived there and dinosaurs could only live in polar regions during the warmer seasons of the year and migrate to warmer places or hibernate during the colder seasons.
Second, the passage states that dinosaur’s legs were beneath their bodies, the feature that all modern endotherms have in common, and considers this as an evidence to prove the hypothesis that dinosaurs are endotherms. On the contrary, the lecturer explains dinosaur’s legs position as a means to support their weight, which allowed them to grow to large sizes.
Third, according to the passage, the fossil bones found from dinosaurs have Haversian canals, which is a characteristic of endothermy and allows animals grow quickly. On the other hand, the lecturer accepts that many dinosaurs have this canal in their bones, but at the same time points out that there is evidence that dinosaurs have stopped growing or growing slowly during cold seasons which challenges the idea presented by the passage.
