Forest fires and storms can greatly damage a forest by burning or uprooting trees, one way of dealing with the aftermath of such a catastrophe is salvage logging. Salvage logging is a practice in which the dead trees are removed from the forest and the wood is used for lumber, plywood and other wood products. It may appears that salvage logging is helpful for the environment and the local economy, however, the lecturer refutes all reasons to believe so.
First, the natural decay process of dead wood leaves behind crucial nutrients, which are very important for the long term health of the forest. If the dead wood is removed artificially for salvage logging, the soil would loose the nutrients it needs.
It is true that dead wood provides a highly suitable habitat for insects, but there is no evidence that these insect harm the forest. Space bark beetles have been living in the forests for hundreds of years without causing any damage to the forest environment. Moreover, the dead trees also provide shelter to other animals which are an important part of forest ecosystem.
Lastly, the economic benefits of salvage logging are also not as beneficial as advertised by the passage. When there is severe damage to the forest, sophisticated equipment like helicopters would have to be used for salvage logging and the jobs created by this practice or temporary in nature. Hence, specially skilled people from outside the local community are hired for this process and the local population has little economic benefit from salvage logging.
In the long run, salvage logging does more harm than good for both the forest and the economy. The forest looses the essential benefits of a natural decay process and the local economy doesn’t get any benefits of the lumber removed for salvage logging.
