TPO-14 - Integrated Writing Task Every year, forest fires and severe stormscause a great deal of damage to forests in the northwestern United States. One way of dealing with the aftermath of these disasters is called salvage logging, which is the practice

The main idea of both the passage and the lecture is about removing dead trees from the affected area which named as salvage logging. In this line of thought, the reading states that salvage logging has some advantages such as forests are choked with dead trees after a burning event, habitat of insects and economic benefits. The lecturer, on the other hand, casts doubt on all the three episodes of arguments mentioned in the passage, believing that none of these strategies are practical and lead to the real world. In the rest of the passage, a comparison between them is provided.

First of all, the reading and the listening materials talk about the dead trees are choking the forest. The author explains that salvage logging is caused by removing the dead plants and fresh trees have more space for growth. On the contrary, the lecturer believes that clean up the jungle don’t provide good conditions for young trees for growth, she believes that the soil uses the nutrients which make with soil for growing plants. This directly contradicts what the passage indicates.

Second, both the text and the talk discuss habitat of the harmful insects. The author points out that dead. Therefore, the trees are a suitable habitat of the harmful insects which can damage the forest. The author elaborates that sum up dead plants can destroy these insects' settlement. However, the lecturer notes it is correct which these insects' existence of wood is a settlement for these insects, but destroying them can make some bad effects on the jungle's ecosystem. The professor believes that the birds and other insects which are useful for forest ecosystem are eating them as food. This was another place where experience contradicted the theory.

Eventually, economic benefits are discussed by both the passage and the lecture. The author mentions that burning has a diverse impact not only on the wood-based company but also on the economy. However, the lecturer states that residents have to employ some helicopter and truck for recovering lumber which is extremely expensive in severally forest burning; also, salvage logging makes some fake jobs which waste money. This opinion directly contradicts the passage presented and making it infeasible.

Sum up, although the passage provides some reasons for the advantages of salvage logging, the lecture opposes about the effectiveness and possibility of those reasons.
