In the lecture, the professor explains why the three solutions proposed in the passage to tackle the over-growing cane toad in Australia are not effective and practical.
To begin with, the passage claims that a fence can be erected to bar the movement of the toad, just like what had been done to rabbits before. However, the lecturer refutes this and argues that young toads and their eggs can not be stoped in this way, because they locate near waterway and can be spread by rivers or streams.
Secondly, the speaker rules out the possibility of recruiting volunteers. Although it is not difficult for ordinary people to kill the animal and their eggs, it is highly likely that these untrained volunteers might harm endogenous frogs as well, which are difficult to be distinguished from the cane toad.
Finally, opposing the third method in the reading material that deploying virus specifically targeting the toad can control the scale of the population, the instructor asserts that it also threatens the cane toad in their original habitats. It is not uncommon for cane toads in Australia to be taken abroad for research, for instance. Pathogens carried with them can also infect the cane toad living in Central and South America, causing disastrous damages to local ecosystem.
